How Often Should You Clean Out Your Fridge?

You should always clean refrigerator spills and leaks as they occur and aim to deep clean your fridge every three to four months. After all, your fridge is one of your home's most important and useful appliances. Cleaning it regularly helps ensure it functions well. It also reduces the chances of someone accidentally eating spoiled food and getting very sick.

Clean Spills When They Happen

If you spill food in your fridge it is important to clean it right away. The same goes if you notice a food leak or an old spill. Clean it as soon as possible to avoid the potential spread of harmful bacteria in the fridge. Cleaning right away also makes the process easier.

Use hot, soapy water on the soiled area. Take the shelf or drawer out if applicable for the best results.

Clean After Throwing Out Food That Went Bad

When you throw out discolored food, moldy food, or items that have otherwise gone bad, it’s time for a quick clean. Focus on the area where the spoiled food was. Work out from that spot if you have time.

To avoid unnecessary (or early) food spoilage, follow the proper settings for your fridge. Keep your refrigerator temperature at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or less, ideally 37 degrees or less. Freezer temperatures should be 0 degrees.

Proper storage also helps keep food fresh. Refrigerate or freeze perishables immediately, and check the storage directions on food labels. Keep food covered and stored in airtight containers. Keep eggs in the refrigerator rather than on the door because of the higher (warmer) temperatures at the door.

Deep Clean Every Three to Four Months

Perform a fridge and freezer deep clean every few months. Do it more often if you can. The process entails removing food and following these main steps.

  • Take out shelves, ice trays, and crispers. Use dish soap or another type of safe cleaner to wash them.
  • Tackle the inside walls and door seals of your fridge and freezer with a mix of hot water and baking soda. Rinse with the same solution from above.
  • Go through your food, food items, and containers. Check for anything that is out of date, discolored, or smelly. Dispose of anything that raises your suspicions. Better safe than sorry. FoodKeeper can clarify any confusion that might appear.
